17th Century Portrait of a Young Man from circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller

£8,000.00

A striking late 17th century portrait of a young man from the circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller. The original period frame is inscribed 'Sir Godfrey Kneller' and the work is possibly by his studio or Kneller himself.

Sir Godfrey Kneller (1649-1723): the leading English portrait artist of the 17th century and celebrated court painter to the monarchs Charles II and George I. He also painted significant figures Isaac Newton and Louis XIV of France. He was pupil of Rembrandt.

This portrait is usual in that it depicts the young man in a confrontational forward facing pose–– gazing at the viewer. He has an air of self confidence and cockiness, especially for a boy of this age.

The subject is thought to be William, Duke of Gloucester–– who was known to be numerously painted by Kneller.

Beautifully painted. The colour palette is very evocative of the restoration period.

Oil on Canvas. 62cmx 74cm.

(Original frame: 77cm x 89cm)
