Bouquet of flowers in a vase Circle of Jean-Baptiste Belin de Fontenay (1653-1715). Oil on canvas.
Belin studied under Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (1636-1699), eventually marrying his daughter and
succeeding him as a flower painter at the Gobelins tapestry workshop. This education and exposure
working with tapestry, informed many a fine flower painting Belin produced.
In our painting, a rich arrangement of flowers, including tulips, roses and smaller white blossoms can be appreciated. Jewel- like in quality, each flower is rendered with precision. The painting is composed with a sense of restraint, balance and order synonymous with 17th century French school painting.
